Focus on Sheep - Issue 9

As we approach another winter feeding and lambing season it is time to think about managing the challenges ahead. Lamb prices are still under pressure due to higher kill rates and higher carcass weights in 2015. This is a consequence of an increase in the national breeding flock coupled with a good grass growing year. A significant increase in lamb supply is forecast into 2016. Finishing lambs as quickly and cost effectively as possible is key to maximising returns. Good nutrition will play an important role in achieving this.
