Andrew Knowles awarded 2015 David Black Award


Andrew Knowles, Marketing Director for Pigs at ForFarmers, was awarded the prestigious 2015 David Black award for his services to the pig industry.

The David Black Award is given to the individual who has made a significant and sustained contribution to the British Pig Industry. Andrew was nominated by an independent panel of judges and accepted the award from Elizabeth Truss, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, at the Palace of Westminster, London on Wednesday.

Andrew said, “I was absolutely stunned and I was also in a bit of a dilemma about accepting it as, to my mind, I was simply doing my job and there is nothing exceptional in my work for the industry."

“This achievement is down to the hard work of not only my colleagues, but also a large number of people in the industry. There were many people who gave their time, expertise and knowledge to the industry in addition to driving their own businesses.”

Andrew, who started his career working on outdoor sow units, became the BPEX (now AHDB Pork) strategy coordinator a week before the Foot and Mouth outbreak in the UK, where he quickly proved he was able to help farmers and the industry at large. In 2009 Andrew was appointed BPEX Head of Communications and Supply Chain Development where he developed a series of initiatives that transformed the UK Pig Industry. He was responsible for Two Tonne Sow, Breed +3, BPEX Pig Health Scheme, Interpig pig performance network, and the innovative and world leading electronic pig movement service (e-AML). The e-AML enables farmers to electronically record the movements of their pigs, which has aided considerably towards the reduction of disease outbreaks in the UK. Andrew was made head of Technical in 2014.

In July of this year, ForFarmers welcomed Andrew into the company as Marketing Director Swine. He played a key role in the VIDA project, and has made a significant and positive impact to the Swine Department and the company. During a difficult period in the industry, Andrew was able to support farmers across the UK. He has contributed heavily to the evolution of the Pig Industry in the UK. ForFarmers would like to congratulate Andrew for this well-deserved David Black Award and recognition for his contribution.
