ForFarmers UK Monogastric Nutritionist, Steve Wilson, was invited to speak at the ‘Antibiotic Stewardship in Animal Health and Food Supply Chain conference’ following the companies ‘highly commended’ award at the ‘Antibiotic Guardian Awards’ in 2019.
The conference, held on the 28th of November 2019 in Manchester, bought together stakeholders from across all sectors under the One Health Agenda and tackled improving antibiotic stewardship in Animal Health, Agriculture and the food supply chain.
In his talk ‘The Total Feed Approach to the Responsible use of Antibiotics’ Steve focused on the work ForFarmers has done so far, showing that good nutrition can support good health.
Steve commented “Nutrition, coupled with good farm practice can support the reduction in antibiotic usage on farm and so the cooperation between the nutritionist, farmer and the veterinary advisor is vitally important, a lot is possible if the sector collaborates!”
ForFarmers has a long term commitment to optimise in feed antibiotics and a lot has happened in the past 4 years. The nutritional composition of diets has changed to enhance gut health and integrity, we have driven some really ambitious work from our Nutritional Innovation Centre (NIC), as well as partnering with AHDB to deliver a series of producer workshops offering on farm practical advice to farmers on strategies to improve animal health.
More recently we hosted an International Veterinary Conference to share nutritional innovation in the area of enhancing pig health between veterinarians. Our next steps are to work with producers and vets to introduce our exciting Nutricare Programme to them.
And the results speak for themselves! At the end of 2018, the percentage of pig feed manufactured by ForFarmers containing medication, fell by 27% which shows just how important the work we’ve done so far is. And there’s always more to come!
