Slurry treatment with Microenzyme

Anthony Gibbon farms in partnership with his parents and brothers Henry and Robert at Fferm y Garreg, nr. Carmarthen.

They farm around 700 acres, all down to forage for their 325 dairy cow and 300 head beef fattening unit.

Both enterprises involve multispan slatted floor housing built over large underfloor slurry storage tanks.


The Dairy Unit

The new dairy unit was built in 2000 around a dairymaster 40 point rotary parlour. The Freisian/Holstein cows, averaging 9000L, are bedded on mattresses dressed with sawdust and lime. The slurry simply drops through the slats into a large 3000cu metre tank which can hold around 800,000 gall. of slurry, and receives very little extra water. The system is agitated with an aero-mixer and emptied by sucking out into a tanker before being pumped around the farm for spreading via an umbilical system. Partial emptying (10-50%) typically takes place every 2 months and the aim is to completely empty twice a year.

Anthony simply mixes the Microzyme in a bucket using water from the nearest drinking trough. After a quick stir with a whisk, he pours 3 mixes/week (2 in summer) through the slats gradually moving the inclusion point around the shed.

After over 3 years of continuous use Anthony is clear about the benefits:

  • We can now use the full capacity of the underfloor storage, so we can empty less often, more quickly and with a lot lower bill at the end.
  • The slurry is extremely consistent which is important for grassland management.
  • Since we started treating, our slurry grows more grass which must mean more N.
  • With land close to the village, I believe the treatment is reducing the smell.
  • The product is simple to use and I think the weekly top ups work well for us.
