John and Pat Pimlott from Park Hill Farm in Shropshire farm a pedigree herd of South Devon Cows and a Hereford bull, together with pedigree Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, and a rescue Berkshire sow. Park Hill Farm holds two Rural Oscars for Enterprise, the second being “a champion of champions” award for the previous decade.
When we bought our first Oxford Sandy and Black piglets back in 2009, we were told how to feed heritage pigs, and what they did well on. We were advised to use Farmgate feeds Sow & Weaner nuts in bags, which were delivered to the farm even with its awkward entrance! This was the best advice we could have had – it translates with the message that feeding a heritage pig a diet which is too high in protein can sometimes lead to excess fat development on the carcass.
Inevitably, we get larger litters, together, and this can mean a large demand for Sow & Weaner nuts, so we have moved over to bulk deliveries now - 3 tonnes at a time. This saves us money and is more convenient, as we don’t have to empty bags into metal bins or pop out to our local store to buy a few bags because we hadn’t kept an eye on stock levels!
The Sow & Weaner nuts do exactly what we need for our business model, and the nutritional value of the feed has been spot on.
