My family milk a herd of 280 Holsteins in Long Sutton, Somerset. I joined ForFarmers in 2014 and during the first year I spent time learning about all the different areas and departments that are within ForFarmers. I then took on the role of youngstock specialist, as I’ve always had a particular interest in this area. I am now National Youngstock Product Manager, working closely with the youngstock team to deliver great products and services to the marketplace.
I was brought up on a family farm in West Wales. I started with ForFarmers as the Youngstock Specialist for Wales over seven years ago. Currently I am the Field Sales Manager for the Medium and Large Dairy sales team, operating mainly out of Carmarthen feed mill. I still maintain the responsibility for the Youngstock within Wales, supporting farmers and the Account Managers operating within this region, having specialist experience in young animal nutrition for over 25 years. Maximising early growth rates in youngstock is paramount to achieving a profitable enterprise. ForFarmers’ complete youngstock range gives me the flexibility to select the optimum solution for each individual customer’s on farm challenges. As a result, customers are able to achieve their desired results within their systems, efficiently and cost effectively.
I joined ForFarmers in June 2021 as a Calf and Youngstock Technician, covering the South of the UK. Prior to this I have worked within the industry for over 6 years on a variety of dairy farms and a calf rearing unit in Somerset, my grandparents were dairy farmers on the Mendip Hills, and this is where my passion for farming began.
I now work as The Calf & Youngstock Specialist and support the Southwest & Wales Ruminant Team. What I enjoy most is working alongside our farmers to maximise their animals' growth rates and overall performance, as healthier livestock achieve greater returns.
Having grown up on a beef and arable farm in Northern Ireland, I have always had a keen interest in agriculture. After graduating university, I worked on a 1,400 cow dairy unit in New Zealand, and as a result I developed a particular interest in youngstock rearing and how to maximise a farm’s profitability by rearing high quality herd replacements. I am also very focussed on transition cow nutrition and its significant impact on calf performance. In 2018, I joined ForFarmers as a Youngstock
Specialist covering Lancashire and Yorkshire. I now continue to support the Northern teams with Youngstock advice, whilst also being part of the National Robot Specialist team.
I grew up on a beef & sheep farm in Beddgelert, Snowdonia, and have always been passionate about animal health and nutrition. I completed my undergraduate degree in Veterinary Bioscience from the University of Glasgow in 2014, before going on to complete a PhD in Dairy Cow Nutrition at Harper Adams University. I joined ForFarmers 4 years ago, I started as a trainee nutritionist and account manager, but have now moved on to become part of the ruminant technical team, working 1 day a week as a youngstock specialist. I have my own small holding rearing dairy X calves, and I return to the family farm to help when I can. I’m very interested in omega-3 and it’s impact on fertility as well as epigenetics (calf development in utero).
